Flinders University was established in 1966 and takes its name from British navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the South Australian coastline in 1802. Its campus is at southern suburb Bedford Park and has other teaching centres at Lincoln Marine Science Centre (Port Lincoln), Northern Territory Clinical School (Darwin and Alice Springs) and the Centre for Remote Health (Alice Springs).

There are 13,392 students, 684 academic staff and 945 other support staff. Its faculties include Education, Humanities, Law and Theology, Health Sciences, Science and Engineering and Social Sciences.

The Institutes attached to Flinders University include The Flinders Medical Research Institute, The Flinders Institute for Health Research, The Flinders Institute for Research in Science and Technology and The Flinders Institute for Research in Society and Culture.

Appropriately, this postmark features Matthew.
